Change of status and extension fees now depend on the period granted (from 1 October 2026)

What changed
Before the revision, the fee for a change of status or an extension of the period of stay was a flat 6,000 yen at the counter and 5,500 yen online. For applications received on or after 1 October 2026 it depends on the period of stay granted, and it is lower online than at the counter. Extension and change of status use the same scale.
| Period granted | Counter (yen) | Online (yen) |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 3 months | 10,000 | 10,000 |
| Over 3 months, up to 6 months | 18,000 | 15,000 |
| Over 6 months, under 1 year | 25,000 | 21,000 |
| 1 year | 33,000 | 27,000 |
| Over 1 year, under 3 years | 48,000 | 42,000 |
| 3 years to under 5 years | 64,000 | 56,000 |
| 5 years or more | 75,000 | 65,000 |
Who it affects
Anyone who files a change of status or an extension from 1 October 2026. Applications received by 30 September 2026 pay the old fee even if the permit is granted on or after 1 October; the new fees apply only to applications made on or after that date.
Paying the fee
- Counter: revenue stamps continue to be used. Cashless payment is only for applications made through the online system.
- Online: pay by convenience-store or bank payment after the completion e-mail. Revenue stamps cannot be used, and credit card or QR code payment is not accepted.
- Online settlement fee on top of the permit fee: 330 yen up to the 42,000-yen tier, and 550 yen for the 56,000-yen and 65,000-yen tiers.
- Official payment e-mails come only from addresses ending in @service-dgft.com and @veritrans.jp. The agency warns that any other message demanding a fee is a scam.
- Re-entry permit online: 3,500 yen (single) or 6,500 yen (multiple) plus a 220-yen settlement fee, 3,720 or 6,720 yen in total.
Reduction
A reduction may be granted only to a person who both lives in hardship comparable to someone needing public assistance and needs humanitarian consideration. The reduced fee is 10,000 yen for a change of status and for an extension. The online system does not support reductions, so those applications must be made at the counter.
What to check
Check the fee table on the agency’s procedure page for your application type, and whether you file online or at the counter, because the amount and the payment method differ.
