What it is

  • Holding a valid visa does not guarantee permission to land; it is only one of the conditions for the landing application, and an officer may still refuse entry, for example if the traveler cannot explain the planned activities properly.
    Quote from the source
A visa is no more than one of the requirements for the application to land in Japan and it does not guarantee that you will be able to enter Japan.

  • A single-entry visa becomes invalid the moment the holder applies for landing; the landing permission stamped by the immigration officer then becomes the legal basis for the stay, while multiple-entry visas stay valid until their own expiry date.
    Quote from the source
The visa immediately becomes invalid once the foreign national applied for landing in Japan.
