Highly Skilled Professional points: what 70 and 80 points mean

The points system gives each applicant a score from one table. The total decides whether you can be recognized and how soon you can apply for permanent residence.

Three categories, one table

Points are added for items such as academic background, professional career, annual salary, age and research achievements, plus bonus items. The scoring differs between three categories: advanced academic research, advanced specialized and technical work, and advanced business management. For the technical and the management categories, annual pay of at least JPY 3 million is required whatever the total.

What 70 and 80 points change

70 points is the pass mark for Highly Skilled Professional status. For permanent residence, the Immigration Services Agency counts the residence period needed as 3 years at 70 points and 1 year at 80 points. Check the official page for the conditions that apply when you apply.

Proving your points

Each item you claim has to be backed by documents. It is enough to submit documents that show the total reaches 70 points. The Immigration Services Agency publishes example documents for each item. Our calculator only adds points; it cannot tell whether a university, training course or employer is on the Minister’s lists.
